We were going to make this page a "pitch" page... you know, with all the great stuff we can do and the low price to set you up with an e-commerce site for on-line sales. But, we'll just teach you a little about starting a web site - and give you some cost-effective ways to do it. So here is the Bigdawg Primer on starting a web site.
To Begin With
... it's relatively cheap and easy to create a web site that will fit most business needs. You probably want the site to look good, to sell your products and you want a store front on the Internet. The first decision (and cost) will be to register a domain name. This is the fee that is paid to the organization that maintains the "master list" of sites and what servers they are on. Several places can register now, and most will also provide low-cost hosting. Try to pick a name that will stick in people's heads, if possible with the .com extension, since that is what - for most - comes to mind first. You can register your name for as little as one year and some sites offer as long as 10 year registration.
After Registering Your Site
You will need a hosting site. This is the server that your files are physically uploaded to and it is a separate cost from registering your name. When you are looking for a host it is important that you select a company that maintains good up-time, supports protocols you will use (for example Front Page extensions), gives you as many email addresses as needed and has a warm body on the other end when there's a problem. It cannot be stressed enough that if your site is down (can't be accessed) too much, people will quit trying... the Internet is a lot of now-you're-here-now-you're-not sites and they will assume you are no more. And that means lost business. We work with a reputable hosting solutions company that allows us to to register a site and one year of hosting for under $150 and can offer significant savings if you want to register your name for up to 10 years. Or start out with one year registration and hosting for 3 months for only $62.00. When we handle your domain set-up and registration, we register under your name and company information - be careful of companies that register your domain under their company and tell you they will transfer it at a later date.

Begin with a goal. What exactly do you want a site for? To familiarize people with your business, or do you want to offer your products for sale on-line? Who will create the site and who will maintain it? Decide how your first page should look. It should load quickly so that your visitors will not loose patience. We recommend a "Splash" page - a page that welcomes people and allows them to navigate easily. Sit down and write down all the "sections" you want your site to have and what you will include in those sections. If you want to sell and collect payment online, you will need a shopping cart and a merchant account. We can help you work with PayPal, an industry standard for online payment, that will let you take credit cards as well as on-line checks without having to set up a merchant account.
